Michael & Sam Visit: Vesuvius & Pompeii

April 30th

Today we tackled Vesuvius and Pompeii.  Unfortunately the clouds rolled in as we climbed Vesuvius.

To climb Vesuvius, you have to take the tourist track.  All the other trails are closed.  Or as best as I could figure out, they're closed.  The tourist track involves a parking lot where you pay 5€ and then it's 10€ a person to access the trail.  The trail rises steeply, zig-zagging back and forth until it levels out at a tacky souvenir shack.  These shacks are about ever 150 meters or so.  You can only walk about half way around the caldera.

A view into the caldera.

I can kind of see out under the clouds.

Sulfur rising from a vent in the caldera.

Noooo!  The clouds are taking over!

This is my apocalypse shot.  Looming clouds and rising sulfur.

This concludes our up close Vesuvius adventure.

Pompeii:

For those of you keeping track, this is my 4th trip to Pompeii.  Once again,  I tried to only upload new or interesting photos so it's not always the same things over and over again.

Looking down the Forum through an arch.

Cave Canem!

Statues in the Men's Bath.
I'm not sure why their skirts randomly change.

Sam and Michael in the picturesque arch that frames Vesuvius (when you can see it).

Fancy pants courtyard.

The amphitheater was closed off today.  Wah wah wah waaaaaaaah.

Pompeii's orchards and "suburban living."

More "suburban living."

The Porta Marina on our way out.

This concludes our Pompeii adventure and our adventures for today
